Celebrating 125 years at Hermidale Public School

Hermidale Public School is proudly celebrated 125 years of learning and community on October 24, 2026.

Approximately 150 people joined us on Saturday 24 October to celebrate 125 years of our school. Many travelled considerable distances, including visitors from Tasmania and Western Australia, reflecting the strong connections people continue to hold with Hermidale.

Our School Captain, Jasmine, and School Leader, Daniel, hosted the assembly. Both spoke extraordinarily well and represented our school with confidence and pride.

Guest speakers shared wonderful memories from different chapters of the school’s history. Former Principal Leone Dewhurst reflected on her time at Hermidale Public School, while Joan Jeffery recalled the antics of the school bus run and its integral role in the Hermidale community. Tammara Wells read a letter from her Aunty Dawn, a former student, sharing her memories of attending the school.

In my principal’s address, I spoke about our community and how Hermidale Public School continues to be the heart of Hermidale—a place where generations of families have learnt, formed friendships and built lasting connections.

A particularly special moment was the performance of an original song by students Jasmine Smith, Daniel McMahon, Tyler Smith, RJ McMahon, James Thompson, George Wells, Malcolm Smith and Sean Thompson. The students wrote the song with Hermidale Public School teacher Jacinta Edge and Lauran Andrews, music teacher from Cobar High School. Their song captured the school’s proud history and our vision for its future, giving our students a meaningful voice in this milestone celebration.

P&C members Tammara Wells, Jacinta Edge, Carly Smith, Nicole Butters and Johanna Sandry unveiled the commemorative pavers. Approximately 100 pavers were purchased by community members, creating a lasting tribute to the families and individuals connected to our school.

Visitors also contributed letters and photographs to our time capsule, which will be sealed and buried in the school garden, with a plaque marking its location for future generations.

Throughout the day, there were countless stories shared, old photographs enjoyed and friendships renewed. There was plenty of laughter, reminiscing and even a few tears as people reflected on their treasured memories.

It was a truly special celebration of our little school and the wider Hermidale community. The warmth, pride and connection felt throughout the day were a wonderful reminder of how much this school means to so many people. Parents and Citizens Association (P&C)

Our P&C is a group of parents, carers and school community members. They assist with school planning, fundraising, events and volunteering. Our P&C works in partnership with our school to promote the interests of our school community.

Joining the P&C a great way to meet other families, get involved and contribute to our school's future. We would love to have you on board!
